Warm up this winter Saturday evening at La Cigogne, a charming French restaurant nestled at 90 Main Street in Narrowsburg. Named after the stork, a symbol of renewal, La Cigogne boasts a stunning ambiance with lofty ceilings and expansive windows that overlook the picturesque Delaware River. The restaurant buzzes with a lively atmosphere, filled with the enticing aromas of hearty dishes and the gentle hum of conversation and music. Guests can indulge in a delightful selection of Alsatian-inspired cuisine and wines, hailing from the culturally rich region of Alsace in Northern France, which shares a border with Germany. Owner Damian, who hails from the beautiful city of Strasbourg, has infused the restaurant with the culinary traditions of his hometown, creating a truly unique dining experience in New York City.

La Cigogne originally launched in Brooklyn in 2014, quickly establishing itself as a beloved fixture in the community with its delightful French cuisine and live jazz performances on weekends. Following the closure of the Brooklyn venue, Damian relocated to the Catskills and later revived his restaurant in Narrowsburg.

Live music on Saturday nights started here a few weeks ago after Damian reached out to local jazz musician Nate Zaur, an incredibly talented organist and piano player. Nate grew up in Philly where he took classical piano lessons as a child before moving to Vermont. It was here at  a summer music camp that Nate first heard a tape of pianist Thelonious Monk playing with saxophonist John Coltrane, and it expanded his idea of music. He began performing with local jazz musicians  and as a teenager sat in with his piano  teacher Bruce Sklar.

After taking a significant break from jazz to concentrate on family life, Nate landed a gig at Here and Now Brewing Company in Honesdale. There, he refined his craft and established himself as a regular performer; you can catch Nate playing at Here and Now every Thursday evening.

On a lively Saturday night at La Cigogne, Nate's trio showcased the talents of guitarist Will Sellenraad, drummer Tyler Dempsey, and special guest saxophonist Adam Lozier. Having collaborated extensively, this ensemble delivered a seamless and polished performance that highlighted their exceptional synergy. The evening featured two energetic sets, featuring inventive interpretations of classics like Wayne Shorter's "United" and "On Green Dolphin Street." The audience, immersed in the rhythm, swayed along and applauded enthusiastically, clearly enjoying the vibrant atmosphere.

The band perfectly matched the ambiance of La Cigogne, which resembles a cozy Apres Ski lodge found in France, making it an ideal setting for enjoying a substantial meal. Patrons can begin their dining experience with options like Onion Soup (adorned with Gruyere cheese), Escargot, or Tuna Tartare. The main courses feature traditional Alsatian specialties, such as Pork Schnitzel, accompanied by a fresh arugula salad and sliced tomatoes, which harmonize beautifully with local wines like Riesling and Pinot Blanc. The menu also includes Half Roasted Chicken au jus served with potato gratin and Steak Frites, both of which are complemented by robust wine selections such as Saint Emilion and Cabernet. For dessert, guests can indulge in a rich chocolate brownie topped with Vanilla Ice Cream or a classic creme brulee, both of which pair nicely with either a glass of Rose or Orange wine.

The decor of La Cigone is welcoming, the food is colorful, satisfying, and delicious, and the overall dining experience is greatly heightened by the soothing sounds of Nate Zaur, who will return  tomorrow, January 11 from 7-9 p.m. as the Saturday night live music series continues.
