With the drop in temperatures, residents across the UK are facing power outages.

As temperatures have plummeted below zero across the UK lately, many of us are experiencing the cold. Snow has started to blanket the ground, prompting many to turn on their heating or reach for their cozy blankets to stay warm.

As weather forecasters issued snow warning earlier this week, the National Energy System Operator said it expected power supplies to become particularly tight. And as the dark nights and cold temperatures prevail, more of us are staying indoors, using gas or electric heating and watching TV.

Numerous regions across the UK have been facing power outages. To avoid the chaos that ensues when the lights go out, it could be beneficial to get ready ahead of time. One woman has devised an ingenious method to help you warm up water or meals in the event of a power failure.

Craft lover Tara Rondinelli, who has 224,000 on her Instagram page @littlepinelearners, said: "If you need to heat up water, soup or other food during a power outage, put tea lights in a muffin tin and you have a DIY stove!"

In her tutorial, she arranges tealights in a muffin tin, ignites them, and then covers the setup with a pan. Sharing her tips, she mentioned, "Make sure not to fully cover the holes of the muffin tin, as that will extinguish the flames. After cooking, you might notice some smoke residue at the bottom of the pan, but I found it wiped away easily!"

"I recommend not using your favorite pot for this purpose. To speed up the heating of water or food, make sure to cover the pot. Additionally, consider placing a heat pad beneath the muffin tin."

Although some individuals expressed doubt about the effectiveness of the trick, others have recounted their successful experiences with it. One person shared, "After Hurricane Helene left us without power in Asheville, I used tea lights to heat water, prepare toast, make quesadillas, and scramble eggs. It definitely works!"

One person commented, "It really does work! I used this technique during Hurricane Milton when we were out of power. The key is to boil as little as possible. That’s how I managed to make coffee!"

Another person recommended: "I tried this too, but instead of using a muffin tin, I opted for a small loaf pan. I placed the rack from my toaster oven on top to brew coffee and prepare instant noodles since the power was out for hours."

Although this hack may prove to be extremely helpful, it's important to exercise caution when using tea lights indoors. Always keep an eye on your DIY stove and never leave flames unsupervised, as this can pose a safety risk.
