ERLANGEN, Germany — In 2021, scientists in Germany made a remarkable announcement. They had successfully induced remission in a young woman suffering from severe lupus, a condition that was causing her organs to fail, by using an innovative treatment method.
Similar to other autoimmune disorders, where the immune system erroneously targets the body, lupus is a long-lasting condition that doesn’t just vanish. For patients, the most promising approach is to manage their symptoms through consistent use of medication. However, this 20-year-old woman experienced a remarkable turn of events; her illness seemed to disappear entirely, leading her to discontinue her other treatments.
It was just a single case report, and in any case the team wasn’t well-known in the global lupus research world. The paper didn’t gain much traction.
