Preventive healthcare is set to become widely adopted.

Healthcare practitioners are progressively providing services labeled as “holistic” and “preventative.” But what does this truly entail? Dr. Samantha Decombel from the DNA testing firm Fitness Genes clarifies: “I’ve had discussions with numerous functional medicine doctors lately, many of whom have transitioned from the NHS. One of them remarked, ‘we must cease rescuing individuals from the river and instead investigate why they are falling in.’ This perspective is impactful; it highlights the significance of a preventative strategy.”

Preventative medicine comprises a huge spectrum of testing and analysis, lifestyle changes, treatments and protocols that can identify risks and prevent ill health. Preventative medicine can also support individuals with existing conditions and prevent those conditions from worsening. From at-home health testing services to platforms that connect physical therapists with clients, we’ll see a huge rise in people seeking to take their wellbeing into their own hands in 2025.

“By addressing the shortcomings of overwhelmed healthcare services, advanced facilities that integrate movement, medicine, and innovative treatments are transforming the conventional healthcare approach from a reactive stance to a proactive one,” says Dr. Enayat, the founder of the HUM2N longevity clinic.

However, there is a darker side to this trend. As a stretched public healthcare system fails to meet the needs of those who rely on it, it will become more necessary for people to turn to preventative medicine to avoid serious health issues which the NHS might not be able to support them through. The creators of Zoe recently slashed the prices of their health monitoring app in a bid to help people think seriously about preventive nutrition and avoid a “full-scale national health crisis”.

Introducing AI coaches, therapists, and personal trainers!

If the idea of a robotic life coach seems more suited for a movie than reality, we hate to break it to you, but you might need to update your perspective. AI-driven therapists, fitness trainers, and wellness coaches are becoming increasingly popular, and by 2025, platforms featuring intelligent prompts, useful chatbots, and algorithm-created health and lifestyle strategies will be commonplace.

As AI becomes more intuitive and informed, and we rely more on wearable technology and data-led insights into our wellbeing, we might soon become totally dependent on AI for advice on how to live healthier lifestyles. However, where therapy is concerned, we’re perhaps not ready to say goodbye to the human touch just yet.

Relationship therapist Stina Sanders recently embarked on an intriguing experiment, comparing her advice to that of ChatGPT. The goal was to determine if a human could provide superior relationship guidance compared to an AI equipped with extensive knowledge of relationships and therapeutic techniques. Interestingly, both Sanders and ChatGPT delivered nearly identical responses, highlighting the advancements in AI technology. However, it was noted that GPT fell short in terms of empathy, nuance, and the personal touch that a human therapist can provide.

Sanders states, “Concerns surrounding data privacy and the potential biases inherent in AI systems are valid. Nonetheless, AI has the potential to greatly enhance the accessibility of therapy, particularly for individuals who may struggle with the costs or logistics of conventional sessions. It can serve as a valuable supplement to traditional therapy, providing support in between sessions and alleviating long waiting periods – effectively closing the accessibility gap.”

Nutritional beverages are set to surpass health foods in popularity.

Off the back of Stanley cup fever and 2024’s #watertok content craze, our obsession with staying hydrated will be met with specialist health drinks and 2025 will be the year of hydration. We’re already seeing healthy goal setting challenges pop up on every social platform and the one thing almost every list has in common is a hydration goal – be that consuming a certain amount of water, simply remembering to drink more each day or choosing filtered water and electrolyte drinks over tap water and fizzy drinks.

We’ll see health drinks for every imaginable need hit the shelves this year. So prepare to say hello to collagen drinks, gut health drinks, sleep drinks, healthy booze alternatives and adaptogenic libations, all with scientific credentials and impossibly cool marketing. Supermarkets will make space for far more healthy drinks than ever before, from herbal hot chocolates to natural energy drinks.

However, be aware that just because something is marketed as being healthy, that doesn’t mean it’s free of sugar, preservatives, additives or other dubious ingredients. Always check the label and remember that there’s no pressure to quaff protein water if you don’t want to.

The concept of longevity will be the topic of conversation for all.

Forget anti-ageing, this year the focus is longevity. We’ll be hearing a lot more about how to live well for longer and new ways to hack our health using supplements, treatments like infrared saunas and cold therapy, and lifestyle and diet changes such as walking 10,000 steps a day and eating 30 plants a week. Tips on optimising our life spans and feeling more energised as we age will be everywhere, with some taking the advice more seriously than others.

Biohacker Bryan Johnson’s new documentary for Netflix, Don’t Die: The Man Who Wants to Live Forever, charts the 47 year-old’s extreme commitment to the science of longevity. Though the show might offer a few useful takeaways to bring into the new year, Johnson’s methods are on another level compared with those we mere mortals might be employing in 2025.

Nonetheless, the daily stretching exercises we do, diet changes we make and brain health supplements we take now, could set us up for a longer and more enjoyable life later down the line so longevity is not a trend to ignore.

Neurocosmetics are poised to be the next major trend in the beauty industry.

By 2025, our skincare products will focus on reducing stress levels in addition to improving skin texture. The beauty and skincare sectors will increasingly incorporate nootropic ingredients, leading to a collaboration between beauty and wellness that results in neurocosmetic treatments and products. Imagine a face cream that enhances serotonin production and balances cortisol levels—what's not to be excited about?

"Consumers are progressively seeking products grounded in scientific research that tackle their health and wellness issues, with claims that are substantiated by evidence. As a result, neurocosmetics serve as a link between everyday practices and reliable neuroscientific studies to enhance daily well-being," says Dr. Anna Persaud, CEO of the beauty company This Works.

It's important to note that this is a new and unexplored field, and results may not always align with what is claimed on the packaging. As this trend gains momentum, you may encounter a lot of wellness washing, so it's essential to stay vigilant about the quality of ingredients, look for independent research, and consult trusted experts. This will help you effectively navigate the realm of mood-enhancing beauty products and the intriguing relationship between skin health and mental well-being.

Regenerative beauty therapies are set to take the place of Botox and fillers.

Exosomes, polynucleotides, and plasma therapy are set to replace hyaluronic acid fillers and forehead Botox treatments, and honestly, it’s long overdue. While fillers and Botox have their merits, their capabilities are somewhat restricted; they enhance appearance but fall short when it comes to promoting skin health.

By 2025, the focus will shift towards preventative and regenerative beauty treatments that promote healthy cell regeneration and radiant skin, instead of merely filling and freezing signs of aging and damage. Beauty is rooted in science, and as medispas and aesthetic practitioners embrace innovations like lasers and stem cell therapies, we will move away from traditional fillers.

We'll take a detailed look at mitochondrial health.

With the rising emphasis on regenerative beauty and wellness, our awareness of cellular health is set to increase significantly. While it may not have been a priority for us before, by 2025, the importance of maintaining healthy cells will be at the forefront of our minds.

"With the growing focus on preventative healthcare and increased personal responsibility for our health, mitochondrial health is gaining attention. These small yet vital cellular powerhouses located within our cells are responsible for producing ATP, which serves as the body's energy currency," say the specialists at W-Wellness, a health concierge and nutrition consultancy.

“Mitochondria are pivotal in lowering disease risk and enhancing energy levels, which is significantly fueling the increasing fascination with this health domain; they are fundamental to longevity, biohacking, and the prevention of chronic illnesses.”

We will focus on customized protocols and results driven by data.

Reading that everyone in the UK ought to be supplementing with Vitamin D is one thing, but understanding your own deficiency levels and determining the right dosage for you is quite another. Additionally, it's important to consider any potential risks involved. By 2025, individualized testing, customized wellness plans, and data that cater to your specific health requirements will become essential. Thankfully, numerous companies have emerged to address the growing need for a personalized approach to health and wellbeing.

“The growing appetite for data is reflected in the surge in popularity of wearable tech such as continuous glucose monitors and Oura rings,” explain the experts at W-Wellness. “Tracking our own health markers allows us to make changes specifically to benefit our own health status, personalising support for individual goals such as better sleep, more energy, even regulating menstrual cycles.”

Being able to check the data from our fitness trackers and use platforms that offer personalised testing means we can also be safer in our choices and avoid taking supplements we don’t need to be taking or risking injury with the wrong kinds of exercise for our bodies. It also means being able to identify possible health risks and work around them.

We can expect a resurgence of ingredients that are natural and influenced by the seasons.

As the debate around ultra-processed foods rages on, we’re all becoming increasingly aware of what’s in our food – not to mention what’s in our beauty products, home fragrances and cleaning supplies. From endocrine-disrupting chemicals to gut-disturbing preservatives, we’ll all be checking labels more and opting for fewer ingredients in 2025.

Natural foods, organic products, and items free from harmful chemicals and carcinogens are expected to gain popularity, particularly among younger consumers. Nonetheless, be cautious of wellness washing, which can mislead you; watch out for “clean beauty” items and “healthy foods” that may still harbor dangerous ingredients. Always read the labels, visit the official websites, and consult with reliable experts for guidance.

Gut health will keep gaining popularity and attention.

Gut health was everywhere in 2024 with new recipes and research from Professor Tim Spector and fascinating studies into the power of the gut-brain axis, but we really only scratched the surface when it came to the magic of the gut. There’s a lot more to unpack in 2025 and we’ll be seeing new research into the gut’s influence on every aspect of our lives, as well as how to take better care of our digestive health with food, drinks and supplements.

We will explore the connections between gut health and various aspects of well-being, including skin health, mental wellness, and hormonal balance. Get ready to be surprised by how the estrobolome—the gut bacteria that plays a crucial role in managing estrogen metabolism—can influence your experience during menopause.

Now’s the time to learn the difference between your pro, pre and postbiotics, find out which bacteria are goodies and which are baddies and how they can impact anything from your breath to your sleep and how often you need to buy a tube of Canesten.

We will be embracing high-performance ways of living.

In 2025, conversations over morning coffee will shift from who had the most drinks the night before to comparing sleep scores with colleagues. The use of fitness trackers, smart rings, and various wearables to monitor sleep, stress, and recovery will usher in a new era focused on performance improvement.

“We’re becoming ‘mini athletes’, using technology, research and routines previously reserved for elite performers, to supercharge our health and happiness,” says Dan Murray-Serter, the co-founder of supplement brand Heights. “We’ve already seen this with the rise of sleep tracking, but in 2025, the high performance habits we adopt will diversify and become more sophisticated, as we delve deeper into the research.”

As Whoop’s founder Will Ahmed told The Independent last year: “You can only really manage what you measure.” So, whether your goal is to sleep better, get a new PB or learn how to meditate, tracking your progress and performance is likely to help you get there this year.
