BRECKENRIDGE, Minn. — Nurses who are registered at CHI St. Francis Breckenridge have made the decision to unionize with AFSCME Council 65.

"We take great pride in our role as nurses and in our commitment to serving our community," stated Ali Steffens, a registered nurse, in a news release from the union regarding the announcement of the union vote.

"Steffens expressed, 'We view our union as a continuation of that pride,' further stating, 'Is there a better way to stand up for ourselves and our patients than through a union?'"

In the news release, another registered nurse, Amie Benedict, expresses her worries regarding the future of health care.

"Benedict stated, 'The hospital has experienced significant turnover recently, resulting in a considerable loss of nursing expertise. Our goal is to address this issue by improving the work environment and making it a more attractive place for staff.'"

As stated in the news announcement, the union voting occurred on January 6th.

FSCME Council 65 advocates for 15,000 employees across government sectors, nonprofit organizations, and healthcare institutions in Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota.

CHI St. Francis Breckenridge is a critical access hospital with 25 beds, providing essential healthcare services to Breckenridge, Wahpeton, North Dakota, and the neighboring communities.
