WEST HAVEN, Jan. 9, 2025 — January marks National Radon Action Month, and the Health Department of the city is urging residents to safeguard their well-being by conducting radon tests in their homes.
Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that is colorless and odorless, resulting from the natural decay of uranium. It ranks as the second leading cause of lung cancer and can be present in various environments, including rock, water, and soil.
City health officials state that although radon in outdoor air presents a minimal risk to human health, it can infiltrate homes from the soil around them, turning into a potential health threat within buildings.
Officials recommend testing for radon every two years.
The state Department of Public Health is offering a limited supply of complimentary radon test kits to residents of West Haven. To obtain a test kit, please contact the city Health Department at 203-937-3660.
