Jonathan Van Ness is taking weight-loss medication to help him deal with a binge-eating disorder that, he says, caused him to rapidly gain and lose weight in the past.
The hairstylist and Queer Eye alum, 37, shared in a post via TikTok on Wednesday, January 8 that he is using a GLP-1, a category of medication that includes Ozempic and is used to treat diabetes and aid in weight loss.
According to the Cleveland Clinic, GLP-1 medications mimic the GLP-1 hormone that the small intestine makes naturally. The hormone slows stomach emptying and increases how full you feel after eating.
“Okay, I need to come clean. I’m currently using a GLP-1 medication for weight loss,” Van Ness shared in his post. “For those of you who have been with me for a while, you’re aware that I’ve experienced significant weight fluctuations openly. At this point in my journey, I realized I needed some additional support.”
Van Ness mentioned that he previously attempted to take the medication in pill form, but it was ineffective. Currently, he is using an injectable version of GLP-1.
"Over the past few years, both in the public eye and in my personal life, I've experienced a lot and as a result, I gained a significant amount of weight and wasn't feeling my best," Van Ness shared. "The key issue was that my binge-eating disorder had spiraled beyond my control."

He went on to say, “I kept making choices that I later regretted, engaging in compulsive eating and bingeing, which only resulted in feelings of sadness and a lack of control over my life.”
Van Ness started his injections in September, and he reports that he "felt an improvement right away."
“For the very first time, I feel like I have control over what I eat,” he shared. “This has made a tremendous difference for me, and that’s why I want to be open about it. I understand the significance of seeking help and how transformative it can be for one’s healing journey. This time, I recognized that I needed assistance.”
