Cannabis, commonly referred to as marijuana, is gaining significant popularity across the United States, with numerous states now permitting its use. As reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 48.2 million Americans, which accounts for roughly 18% of the population, indicated that they used marijuana in 2019.

Although marijuana is commonly used, there remains a significant gap in our understanding of its effects on health. A new study conducted by researchers at Northwestern Medicine offers insights into the possible ways marijuana could influence our DNA.

Marijuana is derived from the Cannabis sativa plant and is commonly consumed by smoking it in hand-rolled cigarettes referred to as joints or through water pipes known as bongs. Additionally, it can be infused into tea or incorporated into various food dishes.

With the increasing acceptance and legalization of marijuana, concerns about its long-term impacts on our health and bodies are becoming more prevalent. A study conducted by Northwestern Medicine sought to investigate these issues by analyzing how marijuana consumption may influence alterations in DNA.

Dr. Lifang Hou, a prominent cancer researcher and the principal investigator of the study, along with her team, examined blood samples from more than 900 adults. These individuals had submitted samples at five-year intervals as part of a previous study focused on heart health.

The researchers inquired about the participants' marijuana consumption during this timeframe, covering both their recent usage and their estimated lifetime exposure. Following this, they analyzed the participants' DNA for any significant alterations.

The research revealed a notable connection between cannabis consumption and alterations in a mechanism known as DNA methylation. This process entails the addition of tiny chemical groups to DNA, influencing the activation or deactivation of particular genes. The scientists discovered between 16 and 132 genetic markers linked to marijuana use.

Numerous markers were identified in DNA areas associated with cellular growth, hormonal control, and immune function. Notably, certain alterations were also connected to mental health issues such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and substance abuse disorders.

It is crucial to understand that this study does not establish a direct link between marijuana and the DNA alterations observed, nor does it confirm that these alterations result in health issues. Rather, it suggests a potential relationship that deserves additional investigation.

The research indicates that cannabis consumption could affect genetic functions in ways that may have health implications; however, further investigations are necessary to validate these findings and to explore their wider significance.

This study paves the way for future investigations into the long-term health impacts of marijuana use. For example, how do these genetic alterations progress with age, and what implications might they have for diseases such as heart issues or mental health disorders?

Although certain studies indicate possible advantages, like utilizing cannabis to alleviate depression, enhance quality of life, or safeguard the aging brain, this recent research highlights that the impact of marijuana on the body is intricate and remains not completely comprehended.

The Northwestern Medicine study, published in Molecular Psychiatry, is an important step toward uncovering how marijuana may impact our health at the molecular level.

With ongoing research, we will develop a better understanding of the advantages and dangers associated with marijuana use, enabling both individuals and policymakers to make more informed decisions regarding this substance that is gaining popularity.
