The World Health Organization (WHO) has urged the reintroduction of measures that were put in place during the COVID-19 pandemic, following a significant increase in cases of human metapneumovirus (HMPV).
As hospitals in China struggle to cope with a surge of respiratory illness cases, the UK is also seeing an increase in infections, causing uncertainty among other countries regarding their response to the situation.
The organization headquartered in Geneva is now advocating for the reinstatement of three essential measures to safeguard communities: wearing masks, practicing isolation, and maintaining hand hygiene.
A representative stated: "The World Health Organization advises that people living in regions experiencing winter should take standard measures to curb the transmission of respiratory pathogens and minimize risks, particularly for those who are most at risk."
"They also recommended that individuals think about using a mask in crowded or inadequately ventilated areas, cover their mouths when coughing or sneezing with a tissue or their elbow, maintain regular hand hygiene, and follow the vaccination guidance provided by their healthcare providers and local public health officials," they stated.
